About This Service.

More detailed questions.

Why the name Vermin?
It was called ver during the initial development phase, but then I decided to add onto it. So I took "ver" and added "min" to complete the word. Now everything related is a vermin. I also named it this when I was 7 shots deep in absolut.

Can I use it for-
Sure just don't be stupid. Familiarize yourself with the /rules before you do anything.

What does this service do?
It allows for (most) files to be uploaded for a certain amount of time, making it easier to distribute files faster without having to rely on other means of using FTP. This services closely follows the same upload principle as uguu.se or litterbox. One thing that I wish others had is encryption without having to get too techincal. This does exist with things like Windows Zip creator or 7zip's Zstandard compression with encryption, but to most people it's not as convinient unless you know how to properly protect your files. Even then if the other person doesn't know what encryption is or what 7zip is, then its more difficult to share files. I only made this because of my personal needs but others are more than welcome to use this service as any other temporary internet file server.

Does this service take my information?
The only thing that I need to know is your IP address, which is logged for moderation purposes.
Other than that, I do not take any other information.
I do not use cookies or any other methods of tracking.

Is this service open?
If by open you mean open source/source available, then no.
If you mean open for public use, then yes.
If you mean no rules/anarchy. Technically no with unencrypted files, encrypted files are a different story.

Why is it not open source?
Short answer: Open source is dead to me.
Long answer: The dev on catbox has made a good point about competition. I am inclined to agree.
I don't perfer to keep the server closed-source, but considering that the codebase is just a simple HTTP file server that saves files on the disk then there is no reason to release it since anyone could make this if they wanted to and open source that. So I just chose to keep it closed source until I want to change that. Though I don't have a problem releasing the binary to anyone, just not the source code itself. The server itself is developed by me and nobody else. Email me or message me if you want a copy of the server binary.

Does this service use anything I upload for AI purposes?
No. I run this on a server that I have to pay for and I am a struggling college student. If I had money I would gladly do something that will keep me alive in this world. AI has no gain for me as far as generating the kite eating tree smiling. (i.e. NOTHING)

Why are certain file types by themselves not allowed but zips of them are?
1: Files by themselves are inherentally more prone to be exploited even if I were to analyze them. Along with that, I don't like having my service be used for evil purposes.
2: ZIP files and by extention most other compression files are less resource impactful on my system that I host from. I prefer the same file holding more files than the former approach.

What is the likelyhood that my files will be cracked even if encrypted?
Encryption can always be broken. I have tried to make it more secure in order to keep something like this from happening. The reason for client side encryption in the browser is because its much easier to have the user protect their files rather than entrusting me to encrypt the files for you. SSE would have been implemented, but that takes more disk writes and I have a limited amount. So I leave the file encrypting up to you. I give you the tools, and its up to you if you want to use them.

You don't look at the files right?
No, because why should I give a fuck? I know that I can look at who uploaded what based on IP but I don't know you nor do I give a shit about who you are. I will only care about what you are doing when you post some shit that makes people complain to me and then I have to remove it and punish you. Better yet just don't post shit that will get everyone fucked over, okay?

Can I share music that I do own even if it copyrighted?
I don't care. I think if you do own it you can share it how you like. Right or no rights, if you bought it you can do whatever you want with it. If no one else can get X thing that someone else has then its okay to share. Thats my take, eat it with a small spoon.

Can I use your service to promote my stuff?
That depends, if you are using it for free, good-will reasons then sure. However; If you are using this to promote yourself for monitary gain then you can fuck off. I don't profitize off my work, and you shouldn't do that either. Otherwise, email me and I'll let you do it for 5% of what you get in total. I'm not joking, if you pay me I'll let you.

Do you have any way for me to support your work? Not at the moment, I do plan on doing that at some point in the future but for now I main just do this for fun in my freetime. Again, I don't like to profitize off my work, unless I put a LARGE amount of time into it. This is not one of those projects.

If the service is broken on a certain part, how can I get a hold of you for issues?
email or xmpp
(I'm more likely to respond over XMPP.)
Contact by email: You will need a email client or provider that supports OpenPGP/GnuPG. Most of my communication is encrypted. Look up instructions on how to setup encryption for emails.
Contact by XMPP: Go make a XMPP account somewhere and download a client that supports OMEMO message encryption, like Gajim or something.
If you suggest Discord or somewhere else, then don't bother messaging me.

Are you a fed?
If I am you better run me over while you are driving if you see me glowing.

TL;DR
Vermin is a file server hosted by the devs of uname.network, it is meant to be a more secure way of sharing files on the internet without having to worry about others getting into your information later down the line. This service supports client side encryption as well as plain uploads for sharing amongst your peers. This service is similar to other temporary services like uguu.se or litterbox.catbox.moe. Please read the /rules before uploading anything and stay safe.
